History was made when Justice DY Chandrachud took over as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI) in November 2022. As the son of former CJI YV Chandrachud, this will be the only father-son duo to have reached the position of the CJI. CJI is equivalent to the United States Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
Justice YV Chandrachud (the father) was appointed to the post of the CJI in 1978, and he retired in 1985, serving the longest tenure of seven years at the post to date. He was the 16th CJI.
His son, Justice DY Chandrachud, is a Harvard University Law School graduate and was first appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 13 May 2016.
