El Shaddai – God Almighty (Part 5)

Finding Grace in the Names of God

Posted

The miracles of Jesus exemplify the great power found only in the Godhead and display the grace of God in human form (John 4:46-47, Luke 5:1-11, Mark 1:23-28, Matthew 14:15-28).  His vast knowledge of life and the scripture amazed even the Pharisees and Sadducees (Matthew 11:27).

Jesus knew the Word because He was the Word in flesh (John 1:1-2).  His unsurpassed wisdom put both the spiritual and political leaders of Jesus’ day to shame and left them in confusion.  His unlimited wisdom is corroborated in 1 Corinthians 1:30 (NASB) where is says, But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption.”  Jesus’ persecution (John 5:18) with the accompanying horrible death on the cross (Luke 23:44-46) provided absolution.  The shedding of his blood for our sin brought us redemption (Hebrews 9:22, Ephesians 1:7).

These actions of Jesus planned by God and executed through the power of the Holy Spirit all attest to Jesus being God.  However, the power and grace of the resurrection is the final proof of eternal life for believers. (John 5:24, John 11:25).

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:13-14, NKJV).

The resurrection itself calls us to repentance and eternal life through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  We cannot refute Him.

We see God’s power depicted in creation, reflected in His grace, display through His provision for redemption, characterized by the offer of salvation, and proven by the resurrection.

We see God’s power in every created thing; we cannot deny Him.  By His grace, we understand that mankind is God’s most important and most precious creation; we cannot resist Him.  Through God’s power and grace, He has provided the redemptive act of Jesus; we cannot dismiss him.  By His power and grace, God has offered salvation to us a free gift; we cannot escape Him.  And finally, as a show of ultimate power and unending grace God performed the resurrection of Jesus which guarantees us eternal life; we cannot doubt Him.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting (Psalms 139:23-24, NKJV).

Since God is all powerful, He is all sufficient.

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31)?

When El Shaddai, God Almighty is on your side there is nothing or no one who can come against you and succeed. If you let that sink in this should give you great confidence especially when you know God is for you.[1]

I want to focus on “Shaddai” as “almighty." What does “God is Almighty” look like in practical terms?

The most obvious expression of God’s might is as the Creator. He is the Maker of all things in the universe—including humans. That isn’t open to dispute in Scripture. “All things were made by Him, and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3). All things were created through the Lord’s power and for Him.

Think of the greatest construction workers you know and the beautiful things they build. God is infinitely a better Constructor than that!  Hebrews 3:4 says it this way: “the builder of all things is God.”

God’s might is far beyond ours because He is eternal—the everlasting God from before time and into the timeless future. He is the everlasting Kind of heaven; and as the Sovereign God and He is answerable to no one![2]
