AVOID LAZINESS

“The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.” – Proverbs 13:4

One of history’s laziest leaders was William Lamb, better known as Lord Melbourne. The British politician once quipped that he thought being PrimeMinister would be a “damned bore.” When the Whig politician became British PM in 1834, he set about confirming that suspicion: His tendency to snooze through cabinet meetings, parliamentary debates and dinners earned him a reputation as a chronic laggard and prompted Benjamin Disraeli to demand that he “cease to saunter over the destinies of a nation and lounge away an empire.” Melbourne — whose favorite dictum was “Why not leave it alone?” — was equally idle when it came to his private life, declining to separate from his adulterous wife for more than a decade after she had scandalized him by having an affair with Lord Byron and writing a tell-all book about it. Historians have concluded that Melbourne does not rank highly as a Prime Minister, for there were no great foreign wars or domestic issues to handle, he lacked major achievements, and he enunciated no grand principles.

The Lord does have a plan for our lives. We need to discover that plan to diligently work at it. Today in prayer, confess any sin of laziness and seek to be a diligent worker.

“Laziness grows on people; it begins in cobwebs and ends in iron chains.” – Thomas Buxton

God’s Word: “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!” – Proverbs 6:6
