“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.’” – Luke 2:13-14

James Montgomery was the son of a Moravian minister in Scotland. His parents became missionaries to the West Indies. They both died when James was a teenager.

By the age of twenty-three, he was a newspaper editor. During the next two years he was imprisoned twice, first for reprinting therein a song in commemoration of "The Fall of the Bastille," and the second for giving an account of a riot in Sheffield.

It was during his time in prison that James composed several different poems.

One of them became the hymn entitled: “Songs of Praise the Angels Sang.” He wrote it in his forties and it shows his deep faith in God.

Later in life, he was recognized for his life’s work and was honored with a public funeral.

All of creation praises Jesus. Today in prayer, let your praise be like when the angels sang.

“Hymns of glory, songs of praise,
Father, unto thee we raise,
Jesu, glory unto thee,
with the Spirit, ever be.” – James Montgomery

God’s Word: “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” – Luke 19:38
