"Consider Abraham: ‘He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’" - Galatians 3:6
In 1921, George Thomas Speer and his wife Lena, along with other family members started the Speer Family Singers. They were farmers who sang to supplement their income. They were different from the beginning, breaking the barrier in Gospel Music by adding female voices in a field totally dominated by all-male quartets.
In 1922, George sold his farm and the family depended solely on singing. During that time, all-day gospel conventions were common in rural areas of Alabama and surrounding states. The family was nomadic as they sang from town-to-town throughout America’s Great Depression.
George and Lena pioneered early Southern Gospel music writing more than 600 gospel songs. They were early recording artists, as well as early radio and television performers.
The Speer family singers continued singing together for the next 77 years, giving glory to Jesus Christ.
No matter what your circumstance, live by faith in Jesus Christ. Today in prayer, give your concerns to Jesus and trust in Him.
